“It’s a juxtaposition between hard and soft.” “I mixed hard and soft for this look.” I’m sure you have heard these two phrases, and other variations on them, a million times. But what do these phrases mean and why does everyone keep saying it? In most cases, “mixing hard and soft” means taking two things that are stereotypically masculine (rough and aggressive to the eye) and feminine (delicate and inoffensive to the eye) and throwing the two together to create something new. It truly is one of my favorite things to do in terms of fashion. Though the two are so different, when paired together correctly, they make for an eye catching and stylish outfit.
Everyone needs a good denim vest. They make for a great layering piece and can help put a much needed cherry on top of that fashion cake. Not only are denim vests stylish, but they also make a great canvas for self-expression with things like patches or buttons (I’ve mentioned this before here). Taking the time to do these decorations makes everything that much more personal and one of a kind. Can I also say how much I love the fur on this vest? It’s perfect for the winter months and totally helps contrast some of the rougher parts of my look.
Leather pants have become such a trend in the past few years. Sure, years ago they were popular with the glam rockers, punk kids, and goths, but they really died off in the mainstream after that. Honestly, you never really know what will be out one year and back in style the next. Leather is a fabric I wish I owned more of because it’s so stretchy, comfortable, and perfect for edging up any look. These leather pants complete this rocker chic look.
I can’t think of any other way to describe these boots than 60’s mod inspired. That’s how I feel when I put them on and that’s what they remind me of. They’re super crisp, with sharp lines and geometrical edges. Like most other parts of this outfit, it’s rough and edgy. They make a statement but are sleek and put together. With the exception of maybe my combat boots, I can’t think of a better or more fitting shoe for this look than the ones I’m currently wearing.
So, have you ever played with hard and soft looks? Do you like mixing stereotypically masculine and feminine fashion? Or can you not be bothered? Let me know in the comments below!
