Activewear and sportswear are two things that you haven’t really seen thrown around in the fashion world until recently. In today’s market, however, you can walk into any major department store and see athleisure wear draped on mannequins and dress forms. Can I personally say why this is? I’m not entirely sure. But I have a feeling it’s because of our fitness-obsessed culture and our never ending pursuit of comfort. These days, you don’t have to be sporty and active to dress like you are.
I constantly catch myself buying garments for the pure challenge of making them stylish. Case in point, this sporty mesh jersey I’m wearing. As stated in an article published not too long ago, I love mixing stereotypical masculine and feminine clothing to create a cohesive look. Taken from the “men’s” section of my local thrift store, it’s really no different from any other mesh or sheer top you’d find in the “women’s” section; it’s just not presented as stylish or chic. Taking gambles and risks is what makes fashion fun. This is one of those occasions.
Even in the summer time, I generally don’t show off my bare chest outside of my house, no matter how much I’d love to. That’s where this cute crushed velvet cami comes in to play. You can’t see it much underneath the football jersey, but I know it’s there, and that’s all that really matters. It’s a nice touch and a subtle way to add color to an otherwise monochromatic outfit. A few layers never hurt anyone! (Unless it’s the dead of summer and 100 degrees outside)
Culottes and gaucho pants always confuse me. I’m never really sure which is which, not matter how many times it’s explained to me. What I do know, however, is that both are pretty stylish. I’m reminded of Jnco jeans whenever I throw a pair on (shows how old I am) but that’s not really a bad thing. I always wanted a pair, so I have to make up for lost time. Baggy clothes are pretty much my thing now, so these pants are going to become a staple in my closet.
To really contrast the sporty, street vibe of this outfit, I threw on my favorite pair of boots. These shoes radiate style and I was actually tickled with how well they pulled this look together. My bat wing boots are my going out shoes and the ones I always put on when I want to make a big statement. Obviously because the rest of this look is so interesting and edgy, these shoes were a no brainer.
So, what are your feelings on athleisure and activewear’s place in fashion? Is sporty chic your thing? Or do you avoid it like the next big plague? Let me know in the comments below!
